Born in Dorset, 1840–1928. Novelist and poet of imagined Wessex. Tess of the d’Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure set fate, rural change and tragic love against a hardening modern England. He pulled the Victorian novel toward a bleaker twentieth-century tone.
