A man with a glass eye in old shabby clothes starts a conversation with a stranger. This man tells his story. He was the owner of an inheritance of over 100,000 pounds. His uncle was a librarian with a big inheritance. Thanks to this inheritance the uncle was able to live comfortably and devote himself to writing books. He wasn't a successful writer and published all the books for his own money. The narrator's mother often brought her son to visit his uncle. She hoped that one day her son would get this inheritance. The old man promised this. Before his death the uncle gave his last book to his nephew as the last word to humanity. When the old man received a response that it was beautiful, he died with a smile on his face. But according to the old will, the inheritance went to a less grateful relative. Why?
