Mr. Verlock left his shop one morning. His brother-in-law remained behind the counter. It was a little London store. Their whole family lived in the apartment directly above the store. Things never went too well. Visitors often walked past a small shop. Books, newspapers and images of naked dancing girls were displayed in its windows. Most of the buyers were men. Young people were often ashamed, especially if Mr. Verlock's wife met them at the counter. They often left without shopping, as they were embarrassed to ask the woman what they needed. There was only one enter in the house of the Verlock's family - in the store. Behind the counter, there was an inconspicuous door to the inner rooms. In fact, working in the store was only a cover for the man. His real work was much more interesting.
